Job Description:

Overview
The ideal STEM Director is committed to creating world-class schools in the Dudley neighborhood, holds a compelling vision for STEM education, and is committed to ensuring that students have access to STEM-related educational and career opportunities in Boston.

The STEM Director reports to the BPE Executive Director and works closely with the Head of School at the Dearborn STEM Academy, the Directors of Instruction in mathematics and science, and with educators across the school. The STEM Director identifies and develops programs and partnerships to support students gaining of mastery across STEM fields. The STEM Director accomplishes this by:

  • Area #1: Leading the effort to craft a vision of STEM education which encourages rigorous and engaging learning experiences across the grades, and supports graduates to leave high school on an ambitious and realistic college and/or career pathway.
  • Area #2: Identifying and cultivating STEM partners for Dearborn STEM Academy, including both corporate and nonprofit programs.
  • Area #3: Supporting efforts to adopt and create rich STEM curricula, projects and programs at the Dearborn STEM Academy.

Boston Plan for Excellence
Boston Plan for Excellence is an education organization operating a PreK-12 pathway of neighborhood based Teaching Academies -- schools that provide a world class education for all students while preparing outstanding new teachers for successful, sustainable careers as urban educators. BPE’s mission is to drive exceptional outcomes for all students by creating great teachers and great schools. We run two Teaching Academies in the Dudley neighborhood of Roxbury: Dudley Street Neighborhood Charter School and Dearborn STEM Academy. Through Boston Teacher Residency, a nationally recognized and replicated clinical model for training teachers, we prepare aspiring educators for the Boston Public Schools, and run a city-wide network of teacher support.

Position Description
The STEM Director provides leadership for the planning, development, and implementation of a STEM education program at the Dearborn STEM Academy. The STEM Director must be a visionary and advocate who has a full and clear understanding of the role and value that STEM education can play in the lives of students, and its capacity to empower all students to develop the critical and creative thinking skills required to succeed in college and the global marketplace of the 21st century. The STEM Director:

  • Seeks out and develops strong partnerships with universities, hospitals, companies and nonprofit organizations to support STEM learning inside and outside the school
  • Supports teachers and administrators in designing and delivering STEM instruction that is consistently ambitious and strengthens all students’ abilities to engage in STEM content as critical thinkers, innovators and problem solvers

While the bulk of this person’s time will focus on supporting STEM efforts at the Dearborn, this person should be excited about the possibility of developing PreK-12 STEM programming and be enthusiastic about collaborating with Dudley Street Neighborhood Charter School staff as opportunities arise.

The STEM Director will support the school leadership team’s efforts to develop and implement an instructional system that meets the academic needs and accelerates the learning of all students.
  • Deeply networked with STEM organizations, and the ability to create new connections and networks.
  • Strong accountability orientation. The STEM Director will be responsible for supporting the leadership of the school in the design and implementation of an ambitious model for STEM instruction that incorporates feedback and accountability practices to evaluate the effectiveness and coherence of curriculum, instructional practices, student interventions, and professional development.

Responsibilities

Area #1: Leading the effort to craft a vision of PreK-12 STEM education which encourages rigorous and engaging learning experiences across the grades, and supports graduates to leave high school on an ambitious and realistic college and/or career pathway.

  • Develops and aligns a STEM vision which promotes college and career readiness with school leaders, teachers, students, families and key external partners.
  • Collaborates with school staff to codify a core set of 21st century STEM skills that every high school graduate should know and be able to do.
  • Maps backward from that skillset to design appropriate academic experiences.
  • Collaborates with school staff to create/adopt the career exposure "curriculum" necessary to familiarize students with the real-world requirements of these careers.

Area #2: Identifying and cultivating STEM partners for both schools, including both corporate and nonprofit programs.

  • Identifies key partners and develops collaborations with industry, hospitals, universities, nonprofits and intermediary organizations to support students’ access to STEM and STEM-related careers.
  • Cultivates partners to provide a range of STEM exposure, exploration, and engagement experiences across grades PreK-12.
  • Works closely with school staff to ensure students have access to and are prepared to succeed in internships.

Area #3: Supporting efforts to adopt and create rich STEM curricula, projects and programs across both schools.

  • Collaborates with Dearborn Directors of Instruction and teachers to support the design and implementation of a coherent, cross-curricular STEM program that is rigorous, culturally responsive, and reflects current research/theory in instruction, in alignment with BPE principles of student learning.
  • Promotes a STEM curricula and teaching practices that engage the learner in tasks that require analytical and critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity; that address each student’s needs, interests and skill levels; that encourage the student to define individual goals and accept responsibility for learning; and that provide a variety of methods for the student to demonstrate performance and achievement.
  • Supports the school leadership team in the design and implementation of professional learning that increases teachers’ knowledge of effective STEM skill development strategies and instruction.

Experience and Skills:

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in education and/or STEM-related discipline.
  • Demonstrated passion for and commitment to the BPE mission and educational model.
  • Track record of creating partnerships with internal and external stakeholders that achieved ambitious goals
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with a demonstrated ability to work independently, lead multiple projects, ruthlessly prioritize, and manage a high volume of tasks, deadlines, requirements, and decisions
  • Sense of humor!
