Dearborn STEM Academy is a Boston Public School and BPE Teaching Academy serving grades 6-12. We are committed to preparing students to successfully enter the 21st century global workforce. The school bridges rigorous academics with career readiness, and leverages Boston’s unique position in higher education and industry to provide students with access to authentic real world experiences, while cultivating critical thinking and communications skills.

Dearborn is a part of a PreK-12 neighborhood school pathway that includes the Dudley Street Neighborhood Charter School (PreK-5). Modeled after teaching hospitals, teaching academies serve as training sites for aspiring teachers participating in the Boston Teacher Residency (BTR) program. All staff work collaboratively to enact ambitious teaching and learning in service of student achievement goals.

Position Description

The BTR Science Coach will be responsible for implementing the two-year BTR teacher preparation program at the Dearborn STEM Academy, with a focus on ensuring that all residents serve as contributing members of teacher teams supporting student learning gains during their residency year, and develop the knowledge and skills required to be effective teachers who are capable of driving significant learning and achievement for all students as teachers of record. Coaches are based at the school and will allocate approximately 60% of their time to the preparation of residents in the school and 40% to the induction of first year BTR graduates serving in BPS schools. Coaches collaborate closely with the Directors of Instruction (DIs) at the Dearborn and will report to the BTR Director (Secondary).

Year 1 Residency

  • Coordinate and facilitate the learning of BTR residents in Science

  • Collaborate with DIs to ensure residents are trained, prepared and aligned with the Dearborn academic model to serve on teacher teams and support significant student learning gains.

  • Collaborate with content Director of Instruction (DI) to plan summer training/learning experiences for residents designed to address the content, skills and knowledge required to serve and learn in BPE teaching academy, with a focus on first month of the school year

  • Deliver and facilitate summer training/learning (2 weeks) with particular focus on content introduction and teaching academy readiness training (site specific to prepare residents to play an immediate role in the school)

  • Design and lead all resident learning time with input from content-area DI to ensure that learning is aligned with and complements the academic model/student learning needs.

  • Facilitate the development of content specific knowledge and skill through a combination of coursework, 'flex-time,' learning sites, rounds, common planning time, differentiated professional development

  • Provide regular coaching and feedback to residents on their practice, through observation and feedback tools (with an emphasis on brief, targeted, digestible feedback)

  • Develop residents’ capacity to track student learning, analyze student work/data and make instructional adjustments to practice

  • Co-lead/facilitate common planning time and department/grade-level meetings with content DI, focused on resident learning experience and differentiating experiences for novices

  • Facilitate the resident assessment process

  • Serve as a resource to BTR Directors in the planning and delivery of training to develop the skill and capacity of Collaborating Teachers

  • Fall and spring performance assessment process designed to collect evidence of residents’ proficiency in meeting indicator/standards expectations on the BTR rubric over time

Year 2 Induction

  • Plan and facilitate the learning of first year BTR graduates

  • Plan and facilitate summer training program that focuses on establishing the systems, routines and structures required for first year teachers to build safe and productive learning environments

  • Observe and provide direct feedback/support to BTR graduates working to build safe and productive learning environments through classroom organization and establishment of routines and systems

  • Develop BTR graduates’ capacity to improve student academic achievement.


Experience and Skills:


  • Advanced degree in education-related field: curriculum, instruction, teacher preparation, etc.

  • Minimum of 7 years professional experience, including coaching or teacher development role

  • Demonstrated knowledge of research-based curriculum development, program implementation and evaluation, adolescent growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, and learning assessment and diagnosis, specific to content area

  • Understanding of and fluency with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, Common Core Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, as applicable to content area

  • Experience in designing and leading professional development

  • Experience managing others, including supporting or coaching novice and veteran teachers

  • Demonstrated passion for and commitment to the BPE-Dearborn mission and educational model

  • Strong and tested ability to participate effectively on teams; a collaborative style

  • Proven ability to prioritize, balance, and complete complex projects in the face of competing deadlines

  • Sense of humor!
