The Dearborn STEM Academy (DSA) is a Boston Public School serving grades 6-12. DSA is committed to supporting and preparing students to be contributing members of their communities and to enter successfully the global workforce of the 21st century. The school bridges rigorous academics with career readiness, and leverages Boston’s unique position in higher education and industry to provide students with access to authentic real-world experiences, while cultivating key critical thinking and communications skills.

DSA is a BPE Teaching Academy, part of a PreK-12 neighborhood school pathway that includes the Dudley Street Neighborhood Charter School (PreK-5). Modeled after teaching hospitals, teaching academies serve as training sites for aspiring teachers participating in the Boston Teacher Residency program. All staff at DSA work collaboratively to enact ambitious teaching and learning in service of student achievement goals.

Position Description

The Director of Instruction for English Language Learners (DI-ELL) will be responsible for leading all aspects of BPE schools’ efforts to ensure that the needs of our ELLs are met in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and the BPE teaching academy educational philosophy. The ideal candidate is an instructional leader skilled at managing a team of educators and staff to provide well-coordinated, comprehensive services to ELLs. The DI-ELL is expected to provide a vision for meeting the individualized needs of all English language learners; to serve as a resource to build the SEI capacity of all educators; to develop and provide leadership for ELL faculty and staff; to oversee all facets of ELL testing and compliance requirements.

  • Knowledge of research-based instruction and assessment practices for English language learners, including serving students within SEI, ESL and SIFE (interrupted education) contexts.

  • Strong accountability orientation. The ELL Director will be responsible for supporting the Principal in the design and implementation of an ambitious model for English Language Learners.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement professional development programs to strengthen staff and leaders' skills in supporting students who are ELLs, including specific plans for expanding general education teachers' repertoire of SEI and differentiation strategies.

  • Supervise and coordinate identification of ELLs using ACCESS and appropriate screening tools, leading curriculum design using the WIDA standards, instructional improvement initiatives, and the development of ESL standards using WIDA and MA Curriculum Framework Standards.

  • Participate actively in school-based data cycles and ensure that ELL strategies/interventions align with priorities identified during data analysis and action planning to ensure that all students achieve at high levels.

  • Participate on the School Leadership Team to partner with other instructional leaders in the development and supervision of ELL programs and staff.

  • Monitor the grades and academic progress of all ELL students to ensure that they have effective interventions and supports and are making.

  • Observe ESL/SEI teachers regularly and evaluate ELL teachers to ensure they are accommodating needs of all students; give teachers timely and prompt feedback.

  • Contribute data and feedback to mid-year and end of year formal evaluations with Head of School.

  • Communicate regularly with the Student Support Team about scholars of concern; meet with the Director of School Culture on a regular basis.

  • Monitor and ensure compliance with district, federal and state ELL regulations; ensure that all functions are consistent with BPE teaching academy vision and goals, as well as BPS and DESE policies and regulations.

  • Oversee and manage allocations of all state and federal entitlement grants for ELL.

  • Ensure that school based staff maintain accurate and comprehensive student records and can verify that ELL strategies/accommodations are implemented consistently.

  • Prepare and supervise DESE program evaluations of ELL programming, including but not limited to DESE school site visits, Coordinated Program Reviews, and English Language Development program evaluations.

Experience and Skills:

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Education or comparable degree from an accredited college or university

  • ESL Teaching License; DESE Trainer status in RETELL

  • Preferably 5-7 years experience as an ELL administrator with a record of high student achievement

  • Second Language Proficiency in Spanish, or Cape Verdean Creole

  • Deep understanding of WIDA and MA Curriculum Frameworks

  • Experience teaching/coaching teachers in the area of ELL students and language acquisition

  • Ability to support teachers in addressing a wide range of student skill, and developmental levels

  • Strong observation, evaluation, instructional and classroom management skills

  • Unyielding commitment to continuous learning and development.

  • Believer in growth mind-set and enthusiastic to reflect and grow as a teacher via coaching and feedback.

  • Maturity, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and "can-do" attitude.
